The ocean... it's not really a silent
world"

Dr. Richard "Grant" Gilmore, Senior Aquatic Ecologist at Dynamac Corporation will team with Dr. Duane De Freese, Vice President of Research at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, to present a display about the Indian River Lagoon, bioacoustics, and the new Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute coastal research center (planned to be built on a site north of Sebastian Inlet on the IRL). |
Dr. De Freese and Hubbs- SeaWorld Research Institute are perfect examples of how one person's vision to protect a coastal resource can become a reality. Dr. De Freese has been a strong advocate of marine conservation in Florida for twenty years. It was De Freese, who envisioned a world-class conservation and research facility at the site of an old abandoned marina on the shores of the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County, Florida. It was the foresight and insight of the Richard King Mellon Foundation that made this dream a reality. The R.K. Mellon Foundation acquired the property and donated it to the not-for-profit Institute with the goal of building a research and conservation facility dedicated to understanding and conserving the rich coastal resources of the Indian River Lagoon and Florida.
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute is a long-time supporter of fisheries research and conservation. In California, the Institute is leading a campaign to restore the white seabass fishery through open-ocean stock enhancement. Milton C. Shedd, legendary supporter of recreational sport fishing and conservation, Chairman of the Board/Owner of AFTCO Manufacturing Co., Inc. and the Co-Founder/Chairman Emeritus of Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute has helped to shape the direction of the Institute since its inception. The not-for-profit institute was founded in 1963 with the mission..."to return to the sea some measure of the benefits derived from it." To learn more you can see their website at www.hswri.org, or through the SeaWorld website at www.SeaWorld.org. You can contact Dr. De Freese by email at defreese@iu.net.
Dr. Grant Gilmore, Senior Aquatic Ecologist at Dynamic Corporation is a world renown fish biologist and Research Associate at Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute. Dr. Gilmore will showcase the role of sounds in the sea and it's importance to fisheries conservation. Dr. Gilmore is one of the leading authorities on Indian River Lagoon fishes. His primary emphasis is on fish distrubution (local and regional migration and zoogeography), population dynamics, community relationships, trophic interactions, habitat relationships and reproductive biology. His studies apply innovative technologies including, manned and unmanned submersibles, remote and manned passive acoustic, advanced visual systems, and a variety of other new and innovative techniques to understand the biology and ecology of fish species. We all know that good science is the basis for good fisheries conservation and management. You will have a unique opportunity to talk directly with these two accomplished marine scientists at the Shallow Water Fishing Expo.
Hear the underwater sounds of the Indian River Lagoon. Increase your understanding of fish behavior and the role of sound. Learn that sound is a critical factor for fisheries conservation. See the research and conservation vision for the new Hubbs-Research Institute in Florida.
